Aluminum phosphide 56 % Mode of Action

Aluminum phosphide 56 % is typically used as a broad-spectrum fumigant pesticide. It is primarily employed to fumigate stored product pests in warehouses, various pests in spaces, storage pests of grains, storage pests of seeds, and outdoor rodents in burrows. Upon absorbing moisture, aluminum phosphide immediately produces highly toxic phosphine gas. This gas enters the insects’ (or rodents’) bodies through their respiratory systems and acts on the respiratory chain and cytochrome oxidase of the cell mitochondria, inhibiting their normal respiration and causing death. In an anaerobic environment, phosphine is not easily inhaled by insects and shows no toxicity. However, in the presence of oxygen, phosphine can be inhaled, leading to insect death. At high concentrations, insects exposed to phosphine may experience paralysis or protective coma, resulting in reduced respiration.

Applications

Aluminum phosphide fumigant products can be used to fumigate raw grains, finished grains, oilseeds, and dried potato products. When fumigating seeds, the moisture content required varies depending on the crop.
