Optimal Conditions and Dosage for Ethephon (Ethylene) Application
- Temperature matters. Ethephon (Ethylene) works best between 20°C and 30°C. Below 20°C, its effectiveness decreases, and it may break down. Over 30°C, it can cause crop damage. So, apply it when temperatures are in the right range.
- Avoid mixing with alkaline products. Ethephon is acidic. Mixing it with alkaline fertilizers or pesticides can cause neutralization, reducing its effectiveness and that of the other product.
- Don’t overuse. Overusing or applying too often can lead to crop damage, like leaf drop or early aging. Use the correct dosage.
- Increase water and nutrients. Ethephon speeds up growth, which means crops will need more water and nutrients. Make sure to supply extra water and fertilizer to support faster growth.
- Harvest on time. After using Ethephon, crops mature faster. Harvest them quickly to prevent overripening, which can reduce storage and transport quality.
- Know how to fix damage. If Ethephon (Ethylene) causes damage (like stunted growth, yellowing, or early fruit drop), take action:
- Rinse the crops with clean water several times.
- Water the crops heavily and apply fast-acting nitrogen fertilizers, like urea.
- For greenhouse crops, raise the daytime temperature and maintain the nighttime temperature to boost growth.
- Spray the affected crops with a gibberellin solution or use brassinosteroids, indole acetic acid, or a urea and potassium dihydrogen phosphate mixture. Repeat this every 7 days until the crops recover.
By following these tips, you can safely and effectively use Ethephon on your crops.
