Downy mildew is a fungal disease that affects plants from seedling to harvest. It causes the most damage to mature plants. The disease mainly targets the leaves. It starts at the base and spreads upwards.
In the early stages, the leaves show light yellow, circular to angular lesions. These lesions may overlap with angular leaf spot disease. In humid conditions, a white, frosty fungal layer forms on the underside of leaves, sometimes spreading to the top.
As the disease progresses, the lesions turn yellow-brown and merge. Severe cases result in the death of outer leaves. This looks similar to yellow wilt disease.
Conditions for Downy Mildew and Its Spread
The pathogen thrives in cool and humid conditions. The spores germinate best at 6°C to 10°C. The infection occurs most rapidly between 15°C to 17°C. Crowded planting, early or excessive watering, and poor drainage can increase the risk.
The disease is common during late spring to early summer or autumn with continuous rain. It can reduce yields by 20% to 40% in severe cases.
